This cabin has been beautifully hand crafted from logs cut near by on our property. It is fully insulated and very cozy in the winter, cool in the summer. It offers a fully equipped kitchen and comfortable living/dining area with a new glass front wood stove and backup electric heat. The large picture window and front deck presents a wonderful view of the unspoiled natural beauty of rolling hills and the Cape Breton Highlands. The bedroom downstairs has a double bed and there is a full bath with tub and shower. Upstairs there is a large open room with chalet style balcony. At your request we can arrange this room as another bedroom, family room, dorm or for other functions.

The Log Chalet is the first of several log retreat cabins built here at Big Hill Retreat on our 200 acre wilderness property. These cottages are very private and secluded. The surrounding countryside is uninhabited with many miles of trails and abandoned roads great for hiking, mountain biking or skiing. Naturally, guests are invited to visit our family homestead (a few minutes walk from the cabin) which includes a vibrant Pottery Studio, Big Hill Pottery , and a large organic garden. We also have a pond for fishing, swimming or skating.
Big Hill Retreat is located on Rear Big Hill, about 2 miles from the Cabot Trail and 10 or 15 minutes drive to the town of Baddeck  (prime tourist destination area for Cape Breton), the Bras d'Or Lakes, St. Ann's Bay and the Gaelic College.

The A-Cabin: very cozy and clean, modified A-frame style cabin finished in 2002. It's the most secluded and private of our cottages with an expansive and beautiful pure wilderness view. Fully equipped. Electric heat and wood stove. Sleeps 2. Ideal for a solitary retreat.
The interior is clean and simple, finished in hemlock and spruce. The round log beams and rafters reflect the natural rugged charm of the surrounding forest from whence they came.

~ SPRUCE COTTAGE ~

(our newest cottage)

This picture was taken in June, 2004 and the Spruce Cottage is brand new. It's similar to the Log Chalet, nicer I think, slightly smaller, all log construction, and hand milled hardwood plank floor. The spruce logs were cut from below the A-Cabin. It is nestled in a beautiful grove of spruce and has a large front deck (with BBQ) and lovely wilderness view. The interior is beautifully hand crafted with full bath, small fully equipped kitchen (includes microwave). This cottage would be very spacious for two people or fine for four. The main sleeping area is the large, one room upstairs loft with double bed. Down stairs there is a futon which may used as a bed as well.

RATES: The rates are the same as for the Log Chalet (see above).
